Field of activity 4 (urban infrastructure) aims to pilot climate-smart and water-sensitive urban infrastructure for further approval by the Regional Coordinating Council and to have this infrastructure examined and implemented. In particular, this involves building the capacity of the urban sub-regional coordination unit to prepare climate-smart regional infrastructure projects that are ready for rollout. It further involves support for the blueprinting of a mechanism for selecting and prioritising urban infrastructure investment projects. By piloting internationally recognised standards for sustainable and resilient infrastructure and by mobilising funds from public sources and international (development) banks, the provinces will make a major contribution to the ongoing implementation of water-sensitive projects (e.g. by scaling up sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS) and strengthening the sponge city concept).
