This project, part of the Mekong Delta Climate Resilience Project (MCRP), and funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Swiss Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) through GIZ, was managed by the Soc Trang City Construction Investment Project Management Unit.
The SUDS was implemented on Phan Boi Chau Street, covering 509m² of pavement. The project includes three components: underground retention tanks, permeable pavement, and tree pits. Construction began on 23/08/2024 and concluded on 22/10/2024. The project aims to:
- reduce flooding in the area.
- contribute to knowledge on sustainable urban drainage, enhance the capacity of local authorities, and support the improvement of policies related to sustainable urban drainage and flood risk reduction.
- introduce innovative stormwater management practices to the public and private sector.
Mr. Tran Van Nhanh, Vice Chairman of the Soc Trang City People’s Committee highlighted plans to scale up the SUDS model to address urban flooding in other areas and ensure the project’s long-term sustainability through effective management and coordination.
The SUDS model in Soc Trang is one of five implemented by the MCRP project, alongside the provinces of Vinh Long, Tra Vinh, Ben Tre, Soc Trang and Bac Lieu. To date, two SUDS models in Vinh Long and Soc Trang have been completed and are now operational. The remaining three models in other provinces are scheduled for construction in the upcoming months, with completion expected by the end of the first quarter of 2025.
