On 26 June 2020 in Kien Giang province, Vietnam Administration of Seas and Islands (VASI) in collaboration with GIZ - Mekong Delta Climate Resilience Programme (MCRP) and UN-Habitat organized the “Workshop on approach and methodology on developing the Master Plan on Sustainable exploitation and use of coastal resources in the period of 2021-2030, vision to 2045”. The workshop introduced the approach and content of the Master plan and defined specific roles and mechanism to promote active participation of relevant stakeholders including ministries and coastal provinces, coastal economic actors and community during the planning process.
The workshop is the important kick-off step in the process of developing the Master Plan on Sustainable exploitation and use of coastal resources in the period of 2021-2030, vision to 2045. This is the intersecting area of sea and land ecosystems, dynamic economic and coastal resources exploitation activities and at the same time is suffering from direct impacts of climate change and sea level rise. Therefore, “coastal zones planning requires an integrated ecosystem-based approach, in which the planning process should be designed to ensure the effective cross-provincial and cross-sectoral cooperation and active participation of coastal economic sectors and coastal communities during the planning process”, said Mr. Vu Truong Son - Deputy General Director of the General Department of Sea and Islands.
According to the “Planning tasks of the Master Plan on Sustainable exploitation and use of coastal resources in the period of 2021-2030, vision to 2045”, Mekong River Delta - the critical coastal zone of Vietnam has the detailed planning. This is in line with the direction of the Prime Minister in Resolution No. No. 120/ NQ-CP dated November 17, 2017 of the Prime Minister on sustainable development of the Mekong Delta in response to climate change. On behalf of VASI, Mr. Vu Truong Son highly appreciated the cooperation and support of GIZ in the planning process, especially the detailed content for the Mekong Delta region and the establishment and operation of the Technical Working Group".
