ENHANCING KNOWLEDGE FOR FARMERS TOWARDS REPLICATING THE RICE-SHRIMP MODEL ACROSS THE MEKONG DELTA

In 2024, 300 rice-shrimp farmers from the Bien Dong Agricultural Cooperative Alliance in Bien Bach Dong commune, Thoi Binh district, were trained to build capacity for technical innovation on rice-shrimp farming towards organic certifications in the context of climate change and saline intrusion.

The training employed a comprehensive teaching approach that integrated both theoretical knowledge and practical applications. This method provided trainees with valuable insights into all phases of the rice-shrimp farming process, including post-larvae (PL) selection, PL nursing, shrimp health management, environmental management, harvesting, post-harvest preservation, and information about international standards applicable to the rice-shrimp model. Furthermore, trainees received hands-on guidance from trainers on methods for monitoring water quality using test kits, fermenting probiotics, detecting signs of shrimp diseases, and recording crop information using logbooks…

Armed with this knowledge, trainees directly involved in rice-shrimp production left the training courses equipped with the skills to produce environmentally friendly and clean products. Looking ahead, the MCRP project will continue to collaborate with DARD Ca Mau, Ca Mau Sub-Department of Fisheries, to organise similar training courses, in tandem with implementing rice-shrimp pilot models towards organic certifications, contributing to the sustainable development of rice-shrimp model across the Mekong delta.
