On 18th July 2023, the Directorate of Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), in cooperation with #GIZVietNam, organized a Consultation workshop to develop the “Proposal on establishing Fisheries Transformation Centers in Kien Giang, Ca Mau and Soc Trang, linked to the coastal fisheries production areas”. Representatives of various departments and agencies of MARD, Departments of Agriculture and Rural Development, Planning and Investment, Industry and Trade, associations, enterprises, and farmer cooperatives from provinces along the Mekong Delta coastline attended the workshop.
During the workshop, the participants listened to presentations, including (i) the Directorate of Fisheries representative presenting the project objectives, requirements, outputs and construction plan, as well as the priority activities and coordination with local stakeholders in implementing the project; (ii) the experts of GFA Consulting Firm sharing some models of Agriculture Hub/ Transformation Centers, international and regional experiences in developing centralized Fisheries Transformation Center; (iii) some challenges in establishing the Centers, and (iv) some recommendations to consider during the development of the Fisheries Transformation Center.
Delegates, especially those from the Mekong Delta coastal provinces, actively contributed their opinions to the development of the proposal. They emphasized the importance of defining the roles and responsibilities of each province, building appropriate policies that are responsive to climate change, water management, and creating an attractive environment for private sector investment, scientific research, and technology.
As part of the 2023 operational plan, the Mekong Delta Climate Resilience Project (MCRP) supported the Directorate of Fisheries in carrying out technical assistance for the development of the "Proposal on Establishing Fisheries Transformation Centers in Kien Giang, Ca Mau, and Soc Trang, linked to the coastal fisheries production areas", following the guidelines set by the Government's Resolution No. 78/NQ/CP and implementing the Prime Minister's Decision No. 287/QD-TTg: Approving the Master Plan of the Mekong Delta for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision towards 2050.
The proposal is expected to be submitted for government approval by the end of 2023.
