A FILM ON SOLUTION FOR SALINITY INTRUSION IN THE MEKONG DELTA

In recent years, the Mekong Delta has continuously experienced severe droughts and saline intrusions, with increasing intensity and complexity. In response to such unwanted development, the Mekong Delta Climate Resilience Programme (MCRP, co-funded by the German and Swiss governments) in collaboration with the Viet Nam Disaster Management Authority (VNDMA), Southern institute for Water Resources Research (SIWRR) and Sub-department of Irrigation of Ca Mau province has piloted the “Temporary dam with removable steel-plates” in U Minh district of Ca Mau province.

This innovative technology has many advantages in compared to the conventional design, which include: can be easily disassembled and relocated for reuse, allowing navigation, minimizing pollution, reasonable cost, and simple operation. In addition to the structural part, the pilot also includes a policy component with purpose to diversify the finances and promote the participation of non-state actors and community in the investment, construction, management, operation and maintenance of climate change adaptation and disaster prevention infrastructures in the Mekong Delta.
