The TC measure combines protection with the optimised use of water resources while taking into account environmental, social and economic aspects, thus contributing to the sustainable management of one of the world’s largest ecosystems and helping to achieve a significant economic and social impact. Maintaining and increasing productivity in the Mekong Delta will help achieve the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 2: End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture; and SDG 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. Cofinancing contributes to sustainable urban development (SDG 11: Sustainable cities and communities).

The proposed measure largely fulfils the development goals listed in the country strategy and in the ICMP development cooperation programme and identifies the Mekong Delta, particularly the coastal area, as a priority area of German cooperation in Viet Nam. The TC measure is also aligned with the Government of Viet Nam’s holistic approach to integrated and sustainable management of the Mekong Delta, which is embedded in its National Green Growth Strategy (NGGS).
