Rethinking Coastal Resource Management: Tackling land-based Plastic Waste during the planning stage
Abstract:
Plastic waste is a worldwide issue, pressing environment with a whopping amount generated and leaked into the ocean everyday. Environmental deterioration is no doubt to continue unless long term intervention solutions are implemented. Vietnam contributes 1.8 million tonnes of plastic waste entering the sea annually, causing a severe impact on ecological and socio-economic aspects alongside the coastal line. The master plan for the sustainable use of natural coastal resources has been developing for the period 2021-2030, a vision to 2045. It is reasonable to emphasize land-based plastic waste management. The policy brief, based on 3RproMar project’s contributions, discusses the perspectives and recommendations for coastal and marine spatial planning as well as the prioritized actions for coastal resource management prospects. It is concluded that the Vietnam government essentially develop a comprehensive roadmap and legislative framework with an interdisciplinary collaboration towards efficient planning and sustainable solutions for land-based plastic waste.
